Description
As promised in the previous list, I upgraded it after the release of Bloomburrow on July 30th 2024. I tested the list and I figured out this can be a thing in the Standard format for the Bo1 and farming (above all if your opponent dosen’t know what is coming after him). This list is very similar to the Izzet Wizards archetype for the Historic format, but if you are a fan of it you can enjoy playing also in the Standard format. Let’s see the final list I came up with and analyze the various cards:
Creatures:
Monastery Swiftspear x4: your turn 1 drop, a 1/2 with haste and prowess; a staple in every aggro deck that uses red color, nothing more to say about it.
Slickshoot Show-Off x4: the most powerful attacker you have in your list; a 1/2 with flying and haste that gets +2/+0 everytime you cast a non-creature spell. It is also a bird, so it will synergize with the counterspell Dazzling Denial.
Balmor x3: your key creature, your enabler; thanks to Balmor all your other creatures will be boosted with a +1/+0 and trample everytime you cast a non-creature spell. If your opponent underestimate Balmor, they\\’ll probably going to lose the game. It is also a bird, so it will synergize with the deck\\’s counterspell Dazzling Denial.
Mockingbird x4: your ace in the sleeves, the jack of all trades; Mockingbird is just a broken card a lot of people will come to know far to well (at their expenses). It\\’s a bird that will copy any creature on the filed, yours but also the ones of your opponent, just paying the same mana cost. For example, by paying only the blue mana of this card you can copy any 1 mana creature on the field (like your Monastery Swiftspear). The copy of Mockingbird is also a bird in addition to his other types (so it will synergize with Dazzling Denial) and can also fly (Hello, flying Sheoldred I just copied from the opponent! Nice to have you on my side!).
Haugty Djinn x3: after playing a lot this list I figured out Tolarian Terror was too slow for the current aggro focused Standard Meta; so I replaced it with Haugty Djinn, a solid choice that discounts for us all the instants and sorceries (enabling us to do more things in one turn or defend us properly). Indeed, with Haugty Djinn almost all of our non creature spells will cost only 1 mana. It also has a good body (4) and his strenght is equal to the number of instants and sorceries in our graveyard, so it synergizes with other cards in our list. Finally, Haugty Djinn also flies, enabling him to overcome enemy defenses.
Instants and Sorceries:
Shore Up x2: an utility card to have for defensive purpose (gives hexproof to your creatures and STAPs them), but also for offense (it gives also +1/+1).
Shock x4: a staple in aggro decks; at the moment this is the best 1 mana damage to any target spell we have in the Standard format.
Monstrous Rage x4: the instant you want to see to close the games and deal a stupidly high amount of damage in a single blow; it gives your creature trample and +3/+1 for only 1 mana cost, plus you have to hold on consideration almost all of your creatures will buff themselves when you play this card.
Demand Answers x4: this is our draw engine; I choosed this card over others because of the low mana cost, the advantage it makes (a +2 drawn cards in your hand) and the possible synergy with Haughty Djinn. To be activated, indeed, this card also requires you to discard a card or destroy an artifact you control; since we won\\’t have artifacts we can put into the graveyard other instants or sorceries we don\\’t need, making also Haughty Djinn stronger.
Dazzling Denial x3: despite we don\\’t have anymore in Standard the stronger version of this kind of counterspells (Spell Pierce), we\\’ll use Dazzling Denial due to his synergy with other bird cards we have. DD, indeed, says that you\\’ll counter target spell unless your opponent pays 2 more mana to cast it, but if you control a bird they\\’ll have to pay 4 mana instead. Paying an additional 4 mana to play something means cutting you off from playing anything else in that turn or it would be an impossible cost to pay in the early game for the oppo.
Blooming Blast x4: why this card instead of the staple Lightning Strike? To be more aggressive at the same mana cost, simple as that. Blooming Blast deals 2 damage to a creature, but if you gifted your opponent a treasure token (a 1 mana token), it will also deal 3 damage directly to them. Basically you can get rid of an opponent creature and also damage them.
Manabase:
Spirebluff Canals and Shivan Reef x4 each of them: the dual mana lands we have in Standard; a staple, nothing more to say.
Eroded Canyon x2: this is a budget dual land card you can put to 4 copies if you don’t have the rare wildcards to craft Shivan Reef or Spirebluff Canal. I see this card like a counterpart of the dual land that enters tapped and gives you one life; this enters tapped and deal 1 damage to the opponent. I preferred to use this to quicken the demise of the opponent due the fact this decklist is an aggressive one.
Thundering Falls x2: another dual land that enters the field tapped (so you can’t use it right away); For this reason I suggest only two copies of it. We are going to use this because Thundering Falls have the ability surveil that allow us to watch the first card of our library and decide to put it into the graveyard or not. This is useful to adjust the draw for the next turn, discarding a useless card, but also synergizes with Haughty Djinn.
That’s all guys, I hope this analysis and this list helps you moving you first steps into the game, but also makes you think how to improve the list and your deckbuilding abilities. In the future I may upgrade again the list based on how the meta settles. Thank you for reading and have fun playing the game!
