Marvel Commander Showcase: Suit Up With These Commanders

Get suited up and power up with these Marvel Commander Deck Showcase, featuring six different Commander decks to play.

Marvel Commander Showcase, The Fantastic Four, Commander, EDH, card art, artwork

Marvel Super Heroes features a ton of commander choices. Between Jumpstart, the main set, and the Command precons, the set introduced a large influx of new toys to play with. In this Marvel Commander Showcase, we’ll go over six different commander choices to bring to your next EDH night. There will be multiple variations of decks and playstyles to make sure there’s something you can enjoy.

Marvel Commander Showcase: Two-Colors

These two commanders are ones that are just two colors. Both of them are a bit more focused on your commander, but not to the extent that they’re pure Voltron commanders. If anything, they’re more “Voltron Light,” meaning they can function like Voltron, but can rely on other creatures instead of only stacking resources into one creature.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is a commander that cares about drawing two cards a turn. Since you already draw one card at the start, you just need one extra draw. This is primarily done by playing artifacts, primarily Equipment. This deck is closer to Voltron, utilizing cards like Power Fist and Blackblade Reforged to deal extra damage with your commander. Making Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur a 6/6 is easy, so that’s a lot of commander damage getting through.

There are multiple cards that care about drawing your second card each turn. Many of them are token generators, including Alandra, Sky Dreamer, Ethereal Investigator, Minn, Wily Illusionist, and Mischievous Mystic. Jolrael, Mwonvuli Recluse does, too, while being a good mana dump if you have a big hand. Homunculus Horde rapidly multiplies, allowing for a giant battlefield just by playing your deck.

One thing this deck does is draw, and it draws frequently. So, you want to ensure you don’t have to discard cards. Wizard Class, Thought Vessel, and Reliquary Tower are going to be your main ways to do so. You can convert all this card draw into counters with Proft's Eidetic Memory too. The Astonishing Ant-Man grows in stats with every card draw, and you can convert all that into tokens whenever you want.

A sample decklist can be viewed below. If you like drawing cards and getting in for commander damage, this is a great commander choice for you.

Taskmaster, Mercenary Mimic

This is a funky hybrid of a Commander deck that’s a mix of Mill, Voltron, and Reanimator. Taskmaster, Mercenary Mimic can turn into any creature in the graveyard or on the battlefield, regardless of whether you control it or not. So, you can constantly swap between utility creatures or power creatures if you’re aiming to close games out. Powerful but expensive cards like Mindleech Mass and Ardyn, the Usurper can be put onto the battlefield without having to pay the mana cost and taking advantage of their effects.

The deck is about utilizing what your opponents have, so milling is a big part of the deck. Both Mesmeric Orb and Mindcrank can provide a constant stream of mill for your opponents (and yourself in the former’s case). If you can keep the monarch, Court of Cunning provides a large stream of mill, while Memory Erosion is a passive stream of it. They’re one-time use, but Breach the Multiverse, Traumatize, and Maddening Cacophony are some mill tools you can take advantage of too.

Normally, you can only use Taskmaster, Mercenary Mimic‘s effect once. That’s where clone effects come in. Cards like Auton Soldier, Chameleon, Master of Disguise, Spark Double, Quantum Misalignment, and Multiversal Recruitment can make a Taskmaster, Mercenary Mimic copy to get as many copies as possible to keep triggering it. Alternatively, you can have them copy the creature that Taskmaster is, letting you keep a copy of that creature around.

A sample decklist can be viewed below. This deck is a very unique hybrid one, so if you want more unorthodox gameplay, Taskmaster, Mercenary Mimic is a great choice of commander.

Looking for a more traditional Reanimator deck? Then you can check out our Reanimator Showcase that shows off a ton of different Reanimator builds.

Marvel Commander Showcase: Heroes and Villains

The two major creature types present in the set are Heroes and Villains, as you would probably expect. Both of these creature types had a precon built around them. The two decks here will utilize a commander from said precons, but upgraded/altered versions of it. So, if you want a base, buy the precon and snag some of these upgrades for them to really boost up their power. Or, just buy these cards individually and sidestep around having to find the precons at all.

While not a Hero or Villain deck, Marvel does have another great Tribal deck with The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, and we happen to have a deck guide for that commander right here for you if you want a different flavor of Tribal.

Captain America, Team Leader (Heroes)

The go-to commander for Heroes is Captain America, Team Leader. It leans heavy in the aggro, giving haste to Heroes as well as counters. This makes it very easy to quickly close out games with how easy it is to spam the battlefield with Heroes. To give bigger boosts, enchantments like Shared Animosity and Cathars' Crusade continuously grow the stats of all your Heroes to always be a threat in combat.

On top of your commander, there are other cards to boost up the power of your Heroes. The easiest is with Agent Phil Coulson, which simply taps to put a +1/+1 on all your other Hero creatures. Nearly all your Heroes will have counters on them, letting Raphael, the Muscle double all the damage they would do. It’s easy for Captain America, Wings of Freedom to have high power, letting it boost the stats of all your other Heroes drastically.

There is a ton of support cards for counters. The best is Herald of Secret Streams, as it’ll make all your creatures unblockable. Winged Hive Tyrant gives them both flying and haste, and Envoy of the Ancestors gives them all lifelink. You can make them extra damaging with Chocobo Knights thanks to granting double strike. You even have a potential one-sided board wipe with Damning Verdict, as you won’t have to destroy your creatures since they’ll all have counters.

A sample decklist can be viewed below. As expected with a Tribal deck, it is primarily made up of creatures, and nearly all of are Heroes.

Loki, the Deceiver (Villains)

Now onto Villains. There are different choices for them, but this list will be using Loki, the Deceiver. You have until the end step until you have to sacrifice them, so cards like Baron Strucker, HYDRA Overlord and Madame Hydra can be used in the second main phase to get the most out of your turn. The deck is about stacking creature effects and playing primarily in the second main phase.

Normally, you have to sacrifice your token copies at the end step. However, there are multiple ways to circumvent this. The best is with The Master, Multiplied, as you won’t ever have to actually sacrifice the tokens at the end step with its ability. You can also end the turn before the trigger to sacrifice is ever put on the stack. This skips having to sacrifice entirely, and can be done with Sundial of the Infinite and Obeka, Brute Chronologist.

The deck is very combat-heavy, so there are a lot of cards that give combat boosts. The Masters of Evil provides all your Villains with +2/+1, and Doctor Octopus, Master Planner delivers +2/+2. You’re conniving a lot, so Iron Monger, Sadistic Tycoon and Mysterio's Mirage are especially useful. The Squadron Sinister and Titania, Proud Pummeler also provide good combat abilities so you can always deal a ton of damage with all your Villains.

A sample decklist can be viewed below. It’s a ton of creatures and combat boosts to make for an aggressive, creature-heavy deck.

Marvel Commander Showcase: The Funky Stuff

These last two decks in our Marvel Commander Showcase are more unorthodox ones. The other decks we talked about here were more “streamlined” and “normal.” But these last two have unique effects that encourage different forms of deckbuilding. They don’t quite fit into any category like the other decks here did, but are just as fun and powerful.

Crystal, Inhuman Princess

Crystal, Inhuman Princess is a Spellslinger deck with a very specific gimmick: nearly all noncreature spells are three colors. The more colors a noncreature spell is, the more burn damage your commander can do. You want to copy your commander with cards like Irenicus's Vile Duplication and Quantum Misalignment to really mount up just how much burn damage you can spit out with every spell being cast.

As with all Spellslinger decks, a natural downside is that you can run out of steam quickly. You have Whirlwind of Thought to help without any outside engines. However, since your commander deals damage, cards that draw you a card when a creature deals damage help to keep your hand full. These cards include Keen Sense, Curiosity, and Ophidian Eye.

Since most of your cards are multi-colored, you can use multi-color support cards. Aragorn, the Uniter can deal a variety of effects depending on what the colors of the cards you play are. To help amass a board state, General Ferrous Rokiric and Hero of Precinct One can make tokens whenever you cast multi-colored spells. It’s minor, but Ancient Cornucopia can gain you some passive life, which can help you stay in the game if it ever drags out.

A sample decklist can be viewed below. It has very few mono-colored cards, and a ton of ways to make the most out of your commander to ensure it deals the most amount of damage as possible.

Loki, God of Lies

What if every cantrip let you steal a creature? That’s what Loki, God of Lies does. It turns all cards that target a creature and draw a card like Ancestral Anger and Expedite into cards that can steal a creature. The deck has a very low curve and can easily play without ever casting a creature that’s not your commander. Instead, you’re using your opponents’ creatures to do your dirty work.

Now, normally your opponent gets the creature back at the end of the turn. However, you can use Sundial of the Infinite to end the turn once you’re done and keep those creatures. Alternatively, you can blink it with Conjurer's Closet, and it’ll return to the battlefield under your control. If you don’t have these, you can sacrifice them instead to cards like Culling Dais and Spawning Pit. If they have high power, Fling and Thud can do a ton of damage to any target while getting rid of the creature so your opponent doesn’t get it back.

Most of the spells you play are only one mana, or at most two. So, cards that create mana when you cast a spell, such as Birgi, God of Storytelling and Electro, Assaulting Battery, are very useful. You also have Guttersnipe and Coruscation Mage to deal burn damage to bring life totals down quicker. You don’t have to worry too much about attackers, as your attackers are going to be your opponents’ creatures.

A sample decklist can be viewed below. The creature suite is small but useful, with the majority of the deck being cantrips to dig through your deck and steal a ton of creatures.
