Kona, Rescue Beastie: Cheating Her Way to Rescue You

Is Mono-Green just about mana dorks and Cultivate? Not anymore. Explore a high-power Bracket 4 strategy centered on Kona, Rescue Beastie. This guide breaks down the “Cheat in Play” archetype.

Thinking on Mono-Green, we often come to the conclusion of endless ramp spells that end up in big creatures or the steady growth of small creatures to overwhelm your opponents. These strategies define the traditional “stompy” archetypes known throughout the format.

However, Kona, Rescue Beastie, presents us with another way of playing big threats as soon as possible. This strategy moves away from the slow accumulation of mana. Instead, it embraces a quick way of cheating massive permanents directly onto the field.

This deck will crush any opponent who’s not prepared to answer the imminent and abrupt onslaught of powerful and costly permanents. It utilizes high-stat creatures and powerful enchantments and artifacts to win the game. Kona, Rescue Beastie will control any pod you play against if they do not respond to it as soon as possible.

Kona’s Premise

The core strategy centers on the survival ability of Kona, Rescue Beastie. This creature possesses a simple yet devastating mechanism. At the beginning of your second main phase, if Kona is tapped, you may put a permanent card from your hand onto the battlefield. This ability is foundational for the deck. It forgets all about the mana curve and just centers on playing devastating permanents way ahead of when you’re supposed to play them.

This strategy functions as a Cheat in Play archetype. It utilizes the inherent strengths of green to find and protect massive threats. While your opponents are still trying to build their battlefield, you will be accumulating massive advantages thanks to Kona. Thankfully, this deck does not rely on a single gimmick and presents a secondary way to play your high-power permanents without depending exclusively on Kona’s ability.

Core Gameplay

The progression of a game with Kona is a study in escalating terror. Every turn should feel like a tightening noose for the opponents. The player must prioritize tapping Kona safely.

Setting the Field

In the early game, you should focus on your mana acceleration and tap enablers. Kona is a four mana commander, so you need to play it as soon as possible, so she requires a stable foundation of mana to rescue you from your opponents. Sol Ring and Emerald Medallion are essential during these opening turns. You must ensure that the mana curve is satisfied early. Utopia Sprawl and Wild Growth serve as efficient ramping tools. They allow for the casting of Kona far ahead of schedule. During this time, minor utility pieces like Jaspera Sentinel or Citanul Stalwart are a must. These creatures allow you to tap Kona without entering combat.

Releasing Your Beastie

Once the game transitions into the mid-game, you should play your core threats. Creatures like Vaultborn Tyrant and Kodama of the East Tree become major problems. Enchantments like Guardian Project are there to maintain your hand size. Allowing you to draw into more powerful creatures. You should focus on thinning the opponents’ options with targeted removal. Beast Within and Krosan Grip provide efficient answers to problematic permanents.

No One will Come to Rescue Them

Your endgame is characterized by having massive, evasive threats. You will be aiming to close the game with powerful combat phases. If the board is stalled, Craterhoof Behemoth or Apex Altisaur can finish the job. The deck counts on the sheer power of Zopandrel, Hunger Dominus to double your strength. At this stage, your opponents should not be able to keep up with you. Ensuring your victory with ease.

Rescue Beastie’s Besties

While Kona will help you traverse the mansion of Duskmourne, she’s not alone, and will bring her best friends to help you.

High-Impact Behemoths

The deck follows the idea of providing massive bodies for minimal mana investment through Kona. Ghalta, Stampede Tyrant is our best example. It is a massive threat that allows you to dump your entire hand onto the field. This turns a single trigger of Kona’s into a wide board presence.

Similarly, Vaultborn Tyrant offers a terrifying passive ability. It draws cards whenever large creatures enter. It also provides a resilient body that recurs itself. This makes every Kona trigger twice as lethal.

Apex Altisaur serves a different role. It is a board-cleansing machine. When it enters, it can fight multiple creatures. This prevents aggressive strategies from ever getting off the ground. It forces opponents to play a “tall” game. Which you’ll be winning more often than not, thanks to your tall creatures entering the battlefield for as little as a simple tap.

Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger and Nyxbloom Ancient provide constant pressure. The former doubles your mana while restricting your opponents. The latter triples your mana production. Most players will find both options distasteful, as your opponents will see their mana base hindered while you’ll be producing abysmal amounts of mana.

Utility and Tutors

Regal Force is a classic staple. It provides a massive body and draws cards for every green creature you control when it enters the battlefield. In a deck with this many creatures, it is often the precursor to a win.

Disciple of Freyalise provides a burst of card draw and life gain. It digs through the library for your high-mana bombs.

Fierce Empath is an incredible tool for consistency. Its ability allows you to tutor a high-mana creature to your hand. This ensures that the next Kona trigger is exactly what you need. Whether it is a land-destroyer like Terastodon or a finisher, the Empath will help you find it.

Allosaurus Shepherd handles counterspell-heavy decks. It ensures your green spells cannot be countered. It can also turn your utility elfs into massive dinosaurs.

Kogla, the Titan Ape and Titan of Industry allow you to exploit the board. They turn the opponents’ best artifacts and enchantments into dust. This is the ultimate insult to a fallen foe.

The High-Cost Finishers

Craterhoof Behemoth and Worldspine Wurm occupy the top end of the curve. They provide tactical advantages in combat. One grants massive buffs and trample. The other provides a massive body that leaves behind smaller wurms.

Spells of the Rescue Beastie

While this deck is creature-heavy, the spells provide the necessary support.

Sorceries of Growth

While cards like Cultivate are often considered the gold standard for green ramp spells. This deck runs the ever powerful Nature's Lore and Three Visits. Allowing you to search for Forests like Dryad Arbor and Gingerbread Cabin.

Rampant Growth offers a standard to get ahead of the curve. Natural Order, our only game changer is a powerful tutor. It allows you to sacrifice a small creature to bring out a game-finisher.

Last March of the Ents is a classic finisher. In the late game, it can draw you twenty or more cards. And then allows you to put any number of creatures in play from your hand. This often results in an immediate victory.

Rishkar's Expertise works similarly while also acting as a free spell caster. It rewards you for having massive creatures on the field.

Coordinated Clobbering provides tactical removal. Allowing you to also tap Kona, while helping you deal with any troublesome creature.

Instant Emergence

The instants provide the necessary speed. Beast Within, Collective Resistance and Krosan Grip are efficient targeted removal. Heroic Intervention is a powerhouse. Its ability protects your entire board from destruction. This makes it one of the most reliable protection spells in the game.

Return of the Wildspeaker allows you to draw cards equal to the greatest power among non-Human creatures you control, or gives +3/+3 to all your non-Humans creatures until the end of turn. It is a versatile tool for any situation.

Smuggler's Surprise is a pretty versatile card, allowing you to mill four cards and returning up to two creatures and/or lands milled this way to your hand, cheat up to two creatures from your hand to play or giving all your creatures with power 4 or greater with hexproof and indestructible until end of turn.

Artifacts and Infrastructure

The artifacts in this deck are chosen for mana production and utility.

Mana Rocks

Sol Ring and Emerald Medallion are mandatory. They will help you to stay ahead of the curve in the early game to cast Kona as soon as possible.

Springleaf Drum provide consistent utility. This card is particularly powerful. It allows you to tap Kona safely, while generating some mana. Allowing some explosive turns early in the game.

Caged Sun provides a massive boost in the mid-game. It allows for the casting of your high-mana creatures with ease by essentially doubling the mana your lands produce. It also works as an anthem for all your green creatures.

Utility Tools

Lightning Greaves is a mandatory inclusion. It provides Kona with haste and shroud. This makes her virtually immune to targeted removal. It also allows her to attack immediately to trigger her ability.

Staff of Domination allows you to do so many things, but most importantly, allows you to use the only infinite combo of this deck.

Akroma's Memorial is a unique inclusion. It grants your entire army a massive suite of keywords. Flying, first strike, vigilance, trample, haste and protection from black and red. This turns every creature into a lethal threat. It assists you in maintaining the grip on the game.

Winter Moon is included to punish greedy mana bases. It ensures that your basic Forests remain an advantage.

Enchantments for your Beasties

The deck runs several enchantments to exploit the board state and provide card draw.

Attrition and Protection

Asceticism and Archetype of Endurance provide layers of protection. They grant your creatures hexproof. Making them especially harder to deal with.

Lurking Predators is a nightmare for your opponents. Basically allowing you to put the top card of your deck in play if it is a creature whenever an opponent casts a spell. This can quickly add up to a lethal amount of pressure.

Guardian Crossroads

The Guardian Project is one of your primary draw engines. The deck features a high density of non-token creatures. Casting this enchantment often leads to a full hand. It provides card draw even if you don’t hit your biggest monsters. It is a powerful tool for any creature-heavy deck.

Concordant Crossroads and Garruk's Uprising provide speed and value. One grants haste to everyone. The other provides trample and card draw whenever you play a creature with power 4 or greater.

The Combos of the Primeval Grove

The deck contains several high-synergy interactions. Alas, the only one worth mentioning is the one we will be discussing. It will often result in a state where your opponents cannot recover.

While this list focuses on raw power, it has a convoluted infinite loop that allows you to play every single card in your deck in a single turn.

The Infinite Staff of Domination

This interaction requires Staff of Domination and Selvala, Heart of the Wilds.

  • First, ensure both permanents are on the battlefield.
  • The player must control a creature with power 6 or greater.
  • Activate Selvala by paying one green mana and tapping it.
  • This adds six manas in any combination you like to your pool.
  • Activate the Staff third ability to untap Selvala.
  • Activate the Staff first ability to untap itself.
  • Repeat the cycle indefinitely.

This results in infinite mana and infinite card draw. It utilizes the massive power of your creatures to fuel the loop. Allowing you to play every single card in your deck if you need it, without depending on Kona’s Ability.

Mana Base: The Lands of the Beastie

Playing Mono-Green allows for a very consistent mana base. This deck runs 25 Basic Forests to capitalize on basic land synergies.

Tapping your Commander without Attacking

Survivors' Encampment and Holdout Settlement are the most important non-basic lands. Together, they allow you to tap Kona for mana. This interaction is the backbone of the deck’s early-game efficiency.

Utility Lands

Command Tower provides consistent mana. Myriad Landscape provides land ramp on a land. It is a tactical inclusion. It ensures that your mana production remains an advantage.

Reliquary Tower provides a massive hand size benefit. It is a vital tool for when your hand is full of monsters.

Closing Words

In conclusion, Kona, Rescue Beastie offers a refreshing take on the Mono-Green identity. It moves away from the standard ramp and introduces a Cheat in Play game style.

This deck presents you with the opportunity to have a presence that is as resilient as it is lethal. Whether you are cheating your massive behemoths into play or playing your entire deck with infinite mana, this deck rewards bold tactical moves with a powerful and entertaining victory.
